The blaze broke out in Mahopac around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at a one-story home near Hill Street and Hitchcock Hill Road, prompting police to close Hill Street between Bullethole Road and Hitchcock Hill Road during the afternoon hours.

According to the Mahopac Falls Fire Department, Assistant Chief Tompkins was first on the scene and confirmed that flames were coming from the right side of the residence. Soon after arriving, he forced open the back door and used a fire extinguisher to suppress the majority of the flames, buying valuable time until more firefighters arrived.

Once fire crews arrived, firefighters stretched a hose line to fully extinguish remaining hot spots and began overhaul operations.

The department credited Assistant Chief Tompkins' decisive actions and the quick response from all involved crews in bringing the fire under control before it could spread further.

"We remind everyone to check your smoke detectors regularly and have an emergency plan in place," the department wrote on social media.
